Mosquito-Proof Your Home: An Evening Routine for the Whole Family

The simplest way to mosquito-proof your home is a short evening routine. Close or screen the openings before dusk, remove standing water, and switch on your repellent in the rooms where the family sleeps and gathers. Do this daily through the season and the whole household gets a calmer night.

When are mosquitoes most active at home?

Many mosquito species are most active around dusk and dawn, which is exactly when families are back home and doors and windows are open. That is why an evening routine, started before the sun goes down, works better than reacting once the mosquitoes are already inside.

What should we do before dusk?

  • Close doors and windows, or use mesh screens, before the light fades.
  • Draw curtains away from the repellent machine so air can move freely.
  • Switch on your vaporizer in the bedrooms and living room, following the directions on the pack.

How do I stop mosquitoes breeding near my home?

Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water. Once a week, empty and scrub anything that holds water: flower pot trays, desert coolers, buckets, spare tyres, plant saucers and the water tray under the fridge. Cover water tanks tightly. It takes ten minutes and removes the places mosquitoes breed.
